10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects
Spring cleaning is not always exciting for most of us. But it is important. As the winter near an end and we start looking forward to spring, something inside of us encourages us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and getting rid of things we’ve collected throughout the winter.
But who says spring cleaning is limited to the interior of a home?
The exterior of your home could likely use a little refreshing after a cold, dreary winter, too!
It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning
Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will improve the appearance of your home in Franklin, and, even more important, will provide much-needed care and maintenance that will save you money over the years ahead.
1. Gutter Cleaning
Spring is the ideal time of year to clean out your gutters, since a lot of leaves and debris collect in the fall and winter. The pollen count is at its highest in spring, making a huge mess in your gutters and downspouts if they are not cleaned.
Plus, pests and animals are looking for places to build their homes in spring, so getting your gutters cleaned out will help prevent an infestation in your home.
Gutter cleaning will consist of cleaning the inside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew, stains and returning them to a like-new appearance.
2. Window Cleaning
Home window cleaning is essential for spring cleaning. First floor windows shouldn’t give you much of a headache, but second and third floor windows are a bit tougher to reach.
Cleaning windows by hand is a tough chore, and will need a lot of tools, not to mention going up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your home’s windows is the best solution to get the panes and the outer frame nice and clean.
3. Pressure Washing
You aren’t going to want clean gutters and windows on a dirty home. This means you are going to want to pressure wash your home too!
Pressure washing is quick, effective and doesn’t cost very much. You can clean your home, patio furniture, patios, porches and walkways with not much effort. It will knock off dirt and mud so they won’t permanently stain your home, and you can also prevent the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.
4. Driveway Cleaning
Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a deep cleaning might seem strange since you will just be driving on it, but, a clean, cared for driveway can increase the curb appeal of your home.
A professional pressure washing company will do wonders for driveway cleaning, whether it’s concrete, asphalt, brick or another material. Also, consider adding a gravel border to your home’s driveway to really make it stand out!
5. Patio Cleaning
Your home’s patio probably gets the most use during the summer, so it can be easy to forget about it in the winter since you are not doing a lot of outdoor entertaining, relaxing or grilling. Your patio could be in pretty bad condition the first time you go onto it in spring.
Detergent and water – and a little muscle – can sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if there are signs of mold or algae, you may need to consider a more aggressive option, like power washing, to ensure that friends and family can safely enjoy your patio all summer long.
6. Roof Cleaning
Algae and moss are common home roof problems in Franklin. While you’re cleaning the exterior of your home, it’s a great time to clean your home’s roof too, but you will need to use a different process than what you use for most of your home’s exterior cleaning.
If you see streaks on your home’s roof, algae is most likely the reason. Moss is pretty obvious, too. These contaminants cannot be wiped off shingles, nor can you pressure wash the roof of your home. Both of these methods will damage the shingles on your home’s roof.
The ideal process for roof cleaning is to spray the shingles with a half-water, half-bleach solution and let it be. This will kill any organisms on your home’s roof without reducing its lifespan.
7. Clean up the Front
The front of your home is likely what most people passing by see, so make the best impression you can for visitors and for yourself! Coming home to a beautiful exterior will improve your day, and will probably motivate you to spend more time outside.
You can clean your porch with soap and water or a good pressure wash. Clean cobwebs and mud off of the front porch, and consider painting it for a fresh look! Clean overlooked areas such as the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.
8. Organize Garden Tools
You’ll probably be spending a lot more time outdoors, so spring is a great chance to organize the things you will need for outdoor chores.
Yard tools and pool care equipment must all have a specific place outside your home – somewhere that it is safe from weather and out of sight so it is not a constant eyesore. Spending the time to organize in the spring allows you to appreciate the exterior of your home so much more during the time of year when you are going to spend the most time outside.
9. Lawn Care & Landscaping
Your yard, trees and garden bushes can make a big impact on the look of your home.
Eliminate weeds around your flower beds and walkways and driveway, till up areas where you might be planting later on and brush off walkways. You can also spray pre-emergent weed poison to make yard maintenance easier on yourself throughout the summer. Trim all bushes too.
10. Clean the Grill
After being unused for months, your gas or charcoal grill could use a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food from your grill are unappetizing, but they can also make you and your family ill.
Wipe it down to get rid of ash, then scrub the grates with a plastic scrubber (so you don’t leave behind particles that can get into food) and a basic dish soap or degreaser.
